Brake life seems to vary significantly from person to person but remember that the PT is a heavy little car. The rotors are thin and don't have much material to burn off before they are too thin to turn. Most folks are able to get one turning out of their factory rotors but if the pads are paper thin now, you could have deep-sixed the rotors also.
Cars with automatics seem to be harder on the brakes since they have less engine braking and the transmission doesn't downshift soon enough to allow the engine to help much.
For the non-GT there are ceramic brake pads that will work without the brake dust and after market rotors that should stand up better than the factory stuff.
