By removing the snorkel you just about triple the size of the air inlet. You can get as much air in as the car can handle, no doubt.
With the snorkel in, the air is more restricted. Maybe that is all the engine can breathe in and by opening it up you are not gaining anything. I don't know. I just think the more air the better.
As for hot air under the hood, many manufacturers make intake systems that have no heat sheild or cold air induction whatsoever. Even Adam's V.A.K. system that he sells has a cone filter with no heat sheild and no one seems to complain.
With the path that the air takes on the turbo, I doubt a "true" cold air system would make much of a difference. On a n/a PT, maybe it does. The n/a does have a shorter path to the intake.
