MY OPINION:
The newer ignition systems put out all the spark you need when new. The plugs and wires are replacement items - I got the Champion platinums and Crane wires expecting them to last longer - and they are already past the stock stuff's lifetime (I have close to 75,000 miles on my PT).
As to Irridium plugs - HYPE.
The only way you'll see a performance benefit is if your current parts are below par and you restore spark to where it oughta be.
