There's a couple different ways to look at tire rotation. For a long time, "some" said to keep tires on the same side of the car (back to front/front to back) because the steel belts in the tires would pull apart if you switched sides. Now, most manuals tell you to use a certain pattern of rotation (front to back/back crossed over when moving forward. Some even say to use the spare in the mix but most spares nowadays are the doughnut type. You asked how wrong was your method...My opinion, as long as you rotate any way, you'll extend the life of the tires...and it's a good way to keep a good eye on tread wear and look for any other problems.
