The LDP is a small air pump. It pressurizes the EVAP & fuel system to make sure there are no leaks. This ensures that no harmfull vapors are escaping to the atmosphere.
So.... it's a pump... and it is used by the PCM to detect leaks...... hence the name Leak Detection Pump.
The whole system is only pressurized to about .5psi, so it's a very small pump.
There's no big surprize that it failed. It has moving parts, electricity passing through it, and it's soaked in 200F+ engine heat. That makes it the most likely to crap out early.
