Inside your PCM is a chip called an EPROM, Electroniclly Programmable Read Only Module. That stores the upgradeable info and as the name implies, the can be "flashed," erased and re-programmed electronically with new info. If that happens to a Stage 1 PCM it becomes a Stage 0 or stock PCM and you lose all the performance you had.
