Poor plan, IMHO. 1) If you're gonna use synthetic oil to get better mileage, I think it's poor economics, because the mileage difference won't pay for the higher oil cost.
2) Syntheic is better oil, which is why I use it, but while it may be true that it doesn't "break down" in 25,000 miles, it will pick up acids & such from combustion that a filter won't remove. I change mine at 5,000 miles.
A big factor in mileage is tires - keep them inflated - try this - find a downslope and at the top, note your speed and take your foot off the gas, and note your speed at the bottom. Do it again with your tires 10 PSI low, and you can feel the difference. Also, low profile tires don't help mileage. I saw a Toyota compact, looked like it was riding on 4 temp spare tires!
