I have the same problem, and as I have an Auto Electrical background I can tell you the answer is quite simple.

Go down to the local auto shop and buy a car earth strap, these are those rubber things you see hanging from the rear of cars.

It is a piece of rubber with a copper core, at one end the rubber/ copper is bolted to the car and as you travel the end that dangles on the road discharges the static build up.

It can be mounted anywhere on the car as long as it is
a) Attached to the body of the car on a Metal section
b) must touch the ground as you drive.

Fabric softener I can not see working ver well at all.
