Big Willy, if it was a stress crack, it would originate at the edge of the windshield, typically within 9" of a corner. Stress cracks are a single crack which may change direction as it grows but will not look like a star burst which is always the result of a foreign object. If the crack doesn't originate at the edge of the windshield, has a star burst or has ANY sign of even a tiny chip (any roughness as you gently rub your finger down the crack), it isn't a stress crack.
I got a stress crack in the windshield of my PT at about 5000 miles. I drove into a driveway and POP, the windshield had a crack development starting from the bottom of the windshield about 4" from the drivers windshield pillar. The crack quickly rose about 6" turned toward the passenger side and cracked about 11" across the windshield. Chrysler replaced the windshield free.
At about 15,000 miles, I heard a POP and a Post Office truck driving ahead of me had thrown a small rock that hit the windshield and created a small star burst. I was able to find a chip repair facility that repaired it for $30. It now looks like a tiny dirty spot where they drilled the hole to pump in the chemicals. All of the star burst disappeared.
