You don't have to pay full price for a WRX, I'm quite sure you can get one around the 23-24k area fairly easy by now (especially for an 04 model). The STI's command more of a premium and a bit harder to bargain down (for obvious reasons).
Taking the price comparison approach to cars gives some sense of measure of a car, but it really doesn't mean much. Stock performance is probably the only indicator that is worth arguing over, but everyone is subjected to different environments and driving skills, it becomes blurry.
Anyone can spend money to modify a car, but imo, the car loses its original essence when you start modfying. Everything starts becoming blurry when a modfied car is compared to another modfied/stock car. In a sense, it's almost pointless to say car A is better than car B because either both is modified or 1 is modified. Imo a modified car that looks like a paticular car doesn't mean it is that car (stock).
Really, people need to stop arguing which car is faster. If you want to really find out who is faster, get find some friends willing to race down the track/deserted location or make a trip to the track.
