That's exactly what causes the throws to be shorter. Shorten the operating lever, shorten the throw.

most short throw shifter kits move the pivot point higher, causing the leverage to be less. If the shifter is the same length, the throw will be less.

Most stock levers are about 5-1. The knob end moves 5 inches to the linkage end moving 1 inch. Changing the upper length shortens the upper lever which changes the ratio. Changing the ratio (moving the pivot up) to 5-2 (example only) will shorten the throw, with the same length.
