When cleaning automotive leather you must realize that it is not drum-dyed leather or naked leather, that is, the dye does not go thru the hide. The leather used in automobiles is analine leather that is painted to achieve the same color as the interior. The color is called a dye, but it is applied like paint. Since this paint/dye is applied on top of the leather it can wear off (have you seen worn seats that the color has been faded off, or scuffed away?) Never use a solvent cleaner and dont scrub the material with anything to aggressive. Always use a non-caustic (no sodium hydroxide) cleaner.
Even though the leather is painted/dyed, it is still porous, and will accept oils back into the analine leather. It important to condition at least 3 times a year to ensure the leather doesnt dry out. Without proper care, the leather will begin to split and crack.
