Some of us have been calling the lower snorkle a silencer therefore it must be a restriction. I tend to agree that it acts as a silencer but I'm not so sure that it's a restriction. It looks rather horn like and may be an aid to air flow with that flare on the end. I have been checking the way that dirt is deposited on the filter element with the snorkel in the airbox and the dirt seems to be fairly evenly spread around. (I'm talking about the Turbo. I haven't laid eyes on the N/A airbox.)
I have no science to back this up, just guessing. I don't think removing it hurts anything and it may sound better to some. Back in the old carburetor days, I used to like the sound of a 4-barrel carb at WOT with no filter. It sounded powerful like it wanted to suck the hood in. [:I]
