With tires, I always try to stay within the manufacturers recommendations. The 6" wheel width we live with is a bummer as anything wider than the standard 205/50 is not rated to run on a 6" wheel.

In actual practice, as long as you are not an aggressive driver when it comes to cornering you should be fine. The sidewalls of a 225/45 are physically bent in at the wheel on a 6" rim. Under normal driving conditions this is not a problem but under extreme side loading conditions it is certainly not optimal.
Not So! Check the Tire Guide. You will see that 215-50-17 are the largest recommended tire for the 17x6 stock rim. I have Conti Extreme's on my 03GT @ 44psi.Runs and handles great.At 60mph I read 59mph.
