I agree with MichaelDay, downshifting in the turn would be bad. Its just like hitting the brakes. What you want to let the laws of physics take over..for just a SECOND, just long enough to get grip again. Definately steer the direction the rear-end is going, that will help you get grip faster. Recovering from a skid is an art, it can be very difficult to do. The best way to learn is actually on a skid pad with a teacher and an old car during a driving course. Its sad to say that few people get that training. There would be far less accidents on the road if driver training were more in depth!
