If it is leaking get it fixed properly. Most AC shops do free checks. Go to 2 or 3( never settle on the first's awnser). If they all tell you the same thing. Take it to the one who is cheapest.
Leaks cause moisture to get into the system. It needs to be fixed propely(evac'ed,fixed, then vac'ed, & then filled).

If you find out from one of the shops that it is something you can replace. Then by all means do it, yourself. Have them evac it. You fix it & then have them fill it up.
Those "kits" are about worthless. If you buy one & "fill" the system, how do you know how much it needs? Do you know how many lbs the system hold? DO you know exactly how many lbs the "kit bottles" have in them?
These are just a few mandatory things you need to know. If you do not know. Then you shouldnt mess with the system.
Too much is just as bad as not enough. Not to mention when you fill it with the "kit". You will still have a leak.
I agree if your do not suspect a leak then do the job yourself but if there is one and you suspect one it would be better to have a prof. fix the problem. I have try recharging my system with everything and nothing has worked
