I didn't realize they did this with PTs, and I may be wrong... but this sounds like the system that Accords have in them since 98. There is a computer chip in the key, and it sends a signal to the car that they key is actually there. In the Accord, if the car is started without the key, the fuel pump does not start up. Therefore the car stops running within 1/4 mile.

That is my best guess as to what is happening to you, especially if you say it works with our old key near the column. As Michael said... should be fixed with programming.
