Don't know how many miles, but in any case, you should replace them - not only because the rubber tore, but because stock don't last. I suggest Crane wires at RaceAndStreet.Com.
I twist the plug wires side-to-side before pulling up to "crack" them.
When you change plugs/wires, suggest - anti-seize lubricant - put a small bit on the spark plug threads to keep them from corroding to the head, and "Dielectric grease" - put a bit on the plug ceramic, and a lot around the outside "boot" of the plug wire that sticks into the head - that'll prevent future problems like you had.
