There is a secret to fuel economy. I've posted this before and I'll do it again. This past week and a half I averaged over 27MPG in my PT GT (stage none).
The #1, most important rule? Don't let how fast other drivers are going influence how fast you go. Unless the other drivers are in front of you, and going a lot slower, you're fine.
Use the cruise control. It will do a better job than probably 90% of people (myself included) at maintaining a steady speed.
Drive the freeways when there are fewer people on them. For me, this means either leaving for work at 7-7:30 or 9 - 9:30, and returning around 4-4:30 or 6-6:30. This way, stop and go traffic will be at a minimum.
If the majority of your driving is in the city, at a lot of stoplights and such, sorry, you are screwed. Screwed screwed screwed. 17MPG is fairly decent for our cars in the city, because every time you leave a light, unless you have the lightest touch on the throttle, you're hitting that turbo boost, and that uses up gas by the truckload.
