GT 17" wheels, here. Yep the stock brake pads will crud up your wheels worse than after-market "low dust" pads. Frequent cleaning is the best protection.

On my chrome, stock wheels, there are many slight stained spots but they can only be seen up close. Also, down inside one rim where the bead of the tire seats on the un-chromed part, I have found corrosion like a cruddy, white build-up and pitting. It was bad enough to cause the tire to go flat. I've mounted new tires and so far they're holding air (but I'm holding my breath).
