I thought I read a couple years ago that you could have a switch put in professionally to turn off the passenger side air bag. Not sure of the exact wording of the law so you might want to change with your local law enforcment to see if your state allows it. My wife's new Suzuki shows a small warning that the passenger air back is off when seating pressure in the passenger seat is not enough for the computer to think there's someone sitting there...not sure of the weight it's looking for and I never tested it with a child.
