I'm not so sure about the universal mounting brackets being an Oxymoran as you put it. I've seen plenty of them in use with Neons. And there are a few makers of them, not just one. Maybe you got one that was hard to work with. That's why I'm asking for more than one brand or option. By the way, nice car RetroPT! Anyone else out there have racing seats?
