strangelove, the water injection itself does not increase boost. It allows you to run higher boost levels without worry of pre-detonation because it dramatically cools the charge in the combustion chambers. It's really more a safety adder than a true power adder, but the killer thing is that it allows you to make more power (potentially a lot more power) while staying very safe.
High boost levels without this extra cooling can lead to (heck, it WILL lead to) the pre-detonation I mentioned above (also known as spark knock) and the PCM will pull timing. Pulling timing reduces power - but the PCM can only do so much and severe, prolonged pre-ignition will literally destroy your engine.
