Not saying your friend doesn't have the axle problem, but lowering was the first mod I did over 5 years ago and I just past 78K without a problem.
He's probably way out of warranty so tell him to get a second and maybe third opinion and I'm sure he'll get a better price than from the dealer.
Plus, who says he has to go back to the old springs? He could have the axle replaced for about $150 + or -
