I change a lot of ignition switches.
Most always, there's a lot of junk on the keychain.
The PT ignition switch isn't tough to replace.
Of those with 5lbs of crap on their keychain, a majority took some kind of physics classes. When I ask them to imagine the pressure on the switch tumblers with the fulcrum at the end of the key...... they just give a blank stare.
With just 8oz hanging down 3 inches, the pressure on a contact point of .125 sq/in inserted 1 inch past the fulcrum, is an incredible ammount of force. Then you make the weight swing and bounce over bumpy roads .... can you inmagine what that key is doing inside the switch?
Usually, a few hundred dollars for a new switch keyed to their car and replaced, will help educate them on the dangers of large keyrings.
