I think it's real. I've read of the rail dust problem.
Agree with RSZappa1 - clay bar does wonders. Keep it moving, keep it wet, and don't press too hard - when the bar just glides, you're done. Then apply a good polish. (I have taken a liking top DuPont Car Polish with Teflon).
