Airaid uses the bottom of the factory box. They provide you with a three sided metal piece that goes on top of the factory box. The metal piece has a seal on top to somewhat seal against the hood. The Airaid has a cone filter. For a lot less money ($30-$35) you can get the K&N drop in filter which will provide the same 2-3 hp gain. With the Airaid you will hear more noise and some people mistakenly translate this into more power. 2-3 hp is nothing you can even feel. The K&N drop in will give you not as much noise and will save you money so you can spend it on other mods.....Sorry, but don't believe in more mpg claims. No way is a better breathing filter going to give you more mpg on a computer controlled car. I've had three PT's with both intake ('01 PT) and drop in filter (both the '03 and '04 PT's) and there is no more mpg to be had. A very sad myth.
