Freak accident?
Freak accident would be if you or I got killed by a wild animal.
Try 'Inevitible'. His life revolved around getting in the face of dangerous wild animals, and he finally ran out of luck.
Tragic? maybe;
Do I feel sympathy for his family and friends? Yes.
But also useful: When the kids get older Steve will make an excellent object lesson in 'Be respectful of critters with sharp teeth, claws and barbs.'
And keep in mind that he died doing what he so obviously enjoyed. Not all of us get to do that.
