Welcome to the forum. Spent 12 years in England (Harrogate) and loved every minute of it. As for your question. An easy way of protecting the edges is to get hold of clear plastic tubing which should be at any good auto shop (Halford's...is that still around?) and cut the length you need and cut a slice lenghtwise all the way down. Pry it open and slip it over the edge of the door. Your might just need 6 inches or so, just where the door would hit the wall and maybe a drop of glue to hold it in place.
