Driving around in 3rd won't hurt nothing except your gas mileage but keep your eye on the tach. If it gets anywhere near redline, you'll want to drop it into overdrive. There's about a 1000 rpm difference in 3rd and overdrive so you'll be driving around nearer the "power band" with a lower gear ratio and that's why you'll have more power when you put your foot down.
