It worked for me on my
2003 GT Turbo--2 1/4 inch pipe size--same as stock. Your friend should consider the
Magnaflow Performance Exhaust System speciafically designed for the PT Cruiser--it has both a straight-through polished SS muffler as well as a resonator (to keep down noise inside the cabin):

The reason I installed the
BTG axle-back exhaust on my
2004 GT is because it was a better buy for the money and gave me the same level of performance as the
Magnaflow.
