You should be warned that the 2002 5-speed shift ball will come off towards the front windshield and dash, so be careful. There's a notch on the front part of the shifter shaft and the shifter ball has a corresponding bulge inside that locks the ball in there. As noted by others, place a towel under the shifter ball and around the shaft (to prevent any marring or scratches), use a crescent wrench or a big pair of pliers under that and gently hit the crescent wrench/pliers with a hammer to loosen/remove the shifter ball.

Many 5-speed owners change the OEM shifter to a Hurst or B&M short shifter so they can use whatever shifter ball they desire since the replacement shifter has a standard 3/8"-16 UNC thread. Also they replace the OEM shifter bushings to the solid Booger Bushings to get a more positive shift and remove the rubbery feel.
