Gary, do you have a link for the shifter? You're kidding about it shifting better right?...
Here is a link for MOMO products: http://www.sportsimportsltd.com/momoshiftknobs1.html You should be able to find some your local speciality/speed shop to see which type you like best. And, YES, for me at least I do believe a larger shifter ball type knob enhanced my shifting ability--your mileage may vary. One of the reasons I switched from my GT 5-speed to the 04GT Autostick when I got my 04GT was because of this problem: http://www.ptcruiserlinks.com/forum/...?TOPIC_ID=8231

For me at least, I believe replacing the stock shifter knob helped slightly in compensating for this "design problem", but, I'm not sure. [:I] Still, no regrets in making the change. These knobs are made in Italy, are of the highest-quality, and LOOK AND FEEL so much better than the inexpensive plasic [V] stock knob.

This is the type of MOMO shift knob I had on my Inferno Red GT......MOMO Race Shift Knob in Perforated Leahter & Aluminum.

MOMO Shift Knobs just might be considered a "performance upgrade" as they seem to make your car go faster because [u]THEY LOOK FAST</u>!!! [)] [8D] [8)]

Here is a picture of my MOMO shift knob. [8D] [^] Good luck. [8]
