I would echo the WIDER body tape; and reinforce with screws.
Soonercruiser was in the shop for paint repair of a run in with a flying wheel cover, and I had them remount a Xenon side skirt while it was in the shop. I had leaned on it pretty hard one time doing a mod, and felt it pop in the middle. The ends are screwed into the wheel wells...but it still popped loose. I could see that the original body shop had used a rather narrow tape.
The other side is doing OK for now.
