I guess by cutting the snorkel back to 1/8" or so within the airbox, not outside, it feeds the air more toward the center of the airbox and not up against the far side. As it is, the snorkel extends a few inches into the airbox, essentially blowing air directly up against the opposite side instead of into the middle and also takes up a bit of space that could be occupied by cool, fresh air (more air, better breathing). Some elect not to cut the snorkel back.

Did you get the K&N drop in filter too? I would think this makes the biggest difference in the airbox. Part # 33-2153 for my '05 but not sure if this is the one for all years? As I said, the K&N with the mods made an appreciable difference in my opinion. I saw a post that its affect has been Dyno-test proven to add a couple horses.
