If what you heard is true, I would think he would have has issues before the change, unless he/mechanic did something wrong during the change.

Most of us look around the 100,000 mile mark as time to change. I'm looking around now to see where the best place to take it. I'm at 90K.

Along with the timing belt, most recommend having the water pump, belt tensioner and normal driving belts changed also as they tend to wear out with mileage and since your in the same area of the engine, your saving labor charges by doing it all at once.
