Good question. I would think, if not completely pulled up and out, it would have to be lifted by a hoist a little bit after unbolting a few things that keep it in place, like the engine mounts.
After reading the Haynes manual, the engine can stay in place (automatic transaxle we're talking about) but has to be held in place by a hoist or a large jack from underneath. The transaxle can be unbolted (plus a lot of other things taken off) and can be moved aside until it's clear from the engine and taken out.
