Keep in mind that Chrysler used some of the cheapest parts to build the PT so the fuel pump burning up wouldn't be that unusual. Just like the cheaper lower control arms, cheaper auto tranny, cheaper brakes, cheaper rotors, cheaper rack and pinion, cheaper motor mounts (torque struts), exterior paint, etc, etc.
