They sit on your dash: the idea is that the glass refraction from the overhead stoplight (red or green) is visible in this glass.
Alternatively, if you're like me and hate to have things on your dash/hanging from the mirror/whatever, you could just be sure to stop BEGORE you're directly under the stoplight! LOL!
