My AirRaid system gives me a distinctly quicker pedal response when needed (the Good Side).
The down side is - I do live the growl, and probably burn more gas because of that.
You have an automatic then. A K&N drop in filter does the same thing. It alleviates the hesitation between the 1-2 shift. Other than that the intake doesn't produce any more power so it's nice for the added sound and looks pretty spiffy.

The OEM system isn't really resrictive, it's the OEM filter that is.
