Are you getting enough fuel in your cylinders?

I had this backfiring and it seemed like a transmission problem, because it would backfire when I got to 2500 rpm and wouldn't go any faster than that. So the problem was that one of my cylinders wasn't working properly because the fuel nozzle couldn't freely spray the fuel in the chamber....it was plugged, which caused the misfire....
