Default '05 Cooling fan troubles

just wondering if anyone else has had this problem or has experience switching one out.

came from the dealer and they told me that my cooling fan needs to be replaced.(the one by the radiator)

what started it all was when I was driving around one day...i noticed when i was idling (at a drive thru or at a light) my a/c would get really warm. then at one point in a parking lot I heard two strange noises that i can only describe as an electrical buzzing. next thing I know i see smoke pouring out from the top of my hood. I shut down instantly . I thought I was overheating but my engine temp never rose above halfway. on the drive home..at highway speeds the a/c works fine...lower speed..it feels warm.

came back from the dealer and they said they tested from the relay, to switch, to fan and found the fan needed to be replaced...they said it was "binding"

and of course it wasn't under my warranty (it was covered in the warranty tier above mine which of course I couldn't afford)

they quoted me 550 for everything.. 315 for the fan itself.
I found out that my local AUtozone..has the cooling fan motor for 109 and the whole assembly for 179

just wondering if anyone has had experience switching this thing out.
should I get the motor or the whole thing (how hard is it to replace the motor into the old assembly)
I'm sure my father and i can switch this out if we had the Hayes manual..but it seems that the '04 '05 manual for the cruiser is hard to find..is it that much different from the '01-'03's?

anyways...any help or advice is greatly appreciated...
thanks for the help guys.
