The only reason I'd get a diesel would be for the ability to run vegtable oil on it. But I'm not sure how hard it is to convert a new diesel emissions vehicle to run on it. Also consider how much harder it will be to find a gas station. Then consider 23K is a decent chunk of change for a Mexican made Jetta. You could get a Prius or Civic Hybrid for that much while getting even better milage than the Jetta, and still being able to buy gas at any gas station.
