It is difficult to troubleshoot electrical problems without electrical/electronics knowledge. Unlike mechanical failure you can't always see the defective part.
If you have a voltmeter you could check voltage drop across the cables.
If you check voltage between the cable source point to the cable termination point, you can check for a bad cable or connection. This measurement should be extremely small, like less than .5 Volts. Make this measurement when cranking the engine to check the battery cables. Your problem seems to be a bad cable or connection. The battery is dependent on the alternator to stay charged. With a bum alternator the battery will usually run down to a point where it wont crank the engine at start.
