Default Re: Buying a code reader - which one?

Inexpensive code readers will not access the transmission, ABS, airbag, body control, instrument cluster, of theft systems. All they do is read engine codes. That seems a waste to only get engine codes, when there are hundreds of faults they cannot read.
A P0700 generic transmission code can be read, but it will not let you read the actual trans fault.
You need a real diagnostic scanner if you want to know what circuit is failing.

For Chrysler brands, I use a DRB-III scanner as well as an OTC Genisys for backup.

The generic engine codes can be read without a code reader. They will show on the odometer.
