Chuck,

If I remember years back when I used to shift gears, first and reverse are the same gear and that's why they are both failing. Something might have changed in all those years though. Changing the gear oil might make a difference, but I doubt it. It can't hurt to try and it is a lot less expensive than having the tranny rebuilt. Why not take it to a transmission shop and have them give you an opinion of what it might be and what it would cost. The dealer wolud just replace it without probably even looking at it.
