N/A Base Engine vs Turbo Engine
Going through the Hot Rod Teardown Article Sept '03.
The article identifies that the head and block are essentially the same in the beginning, but:
Turbo Modifications:
Slight casting revisions for improved coolant flow,
An extra oil galley for squirting oil up into the piston (cooling),
Extra oil and coolant taps and passages for the turbo
Hardened nodular crank
Forged rods with added oil routs (to handle the torque)
Lightened, reshaped, and lower-compression eutectic pistons
Upgraded Intake and Exhaust valves
Upgraded head gasket
Cast aluminum valve cover with special internal baffles
Turbo intake and exhaust manifolds (quite obvious)
Intercooler (also obvious)
I might have missed some things, help me out here.
The question needs to be asked...if Chrysler wanted to make this engine cheaper for the 180 hp version. What pieces could they do without, and not run into long term dependability problems?[:I]
