Welcome to the madness. 
The creaking on my wife's '04 was the endlink bushings on the front sway bar. I'd have those checked out before I'd let the shop put a knife in my back for several hundred dollars. At 54k I personally don't believe it is the shocks. Have another independent shop check it out first.
