I wouldn't even mess with those FM transmitters. If you can't afford a new deck, look for a used one. I got a nice Pioneer from my brother that's iPod-specific and the deck controls the iPod. It also displays track information so you don't have to mess with looking at the iPod. I don't know if you have a brand you prefer but almost all of the major manufacturers make a deck compatible with iPods. If you can't find one within your price range that's iPod-specific, look for a deck with an aux input. Those can be even cheaper since some much older decks have aux inputs. I'm not sure of your capabilities but changing out a factory deck for an aftermarket one is very easy. All you'll need is a dash kit ($12 or so), a wiring harness adapter ($10) and some crimp-on wire connectors (you can solder if you're really picky about your connections).
