They say it takes a 6 3/4 not a 6.5 so that may be the issue he is reffering to that makes the speaker harder to source.
In most stereo shops we use installtion rings to get a nice tight fit in these cases.
Yes a ring can be bought to sit a 6.5.
He simply stated that if you GUT the OEM speaker for its basket you can use it to sit a smaller speaker without shelling out extra cash on fitment rings.

Yes smaller speaker means smaller sound but on a budget and left over speakers why not. Most older people just want AM radio and some stereo music. So LOUD larger sound is not an issue.
